MIKLOS’S PERSONAL TOUR
Best for food RETRÓ LÁNGOS BÜFÉ
The best lángos (fried flatbreads) in the city - don’t be put off by its surroundings (Arany János metro station); the food is exceptional.
Favourite café DESSZERT NEKED
Although it’s a pastry shop, the coffee is highly recommended here, especially if enjoyed with one of their super delicious desserts. Very friendly staff, too. desszertneked.hu/
Favourite restaurant BOCK BISZTRÓ
Collaborating with a famous Hungarian winery of the same name, they focus on high-quality yet traditional Hungarian food. And, of course, great wines. bockbisztropest.hu/
Favourite market
Hold Street Market ( Belvárosi
Piac). The highest quality market in the city with an epic food court offering all the tastes of Hungary. The Flea Markets at Gozsdu Udvar and Klauzál square on weekends are worth a visit, too.
Favourite way to spend an hour
Having a glass of spritzer ( fröccs) or lemonade at Erzsébet square. We Hungarians love to put sparkling water into fruity-dry white or rosé wines. There are so many variatons, each with a different name, that even I forget them!
Best view
Definitely from the Citadel, which is at the top of Gellért-hill. Looking north, you can see Buda Castle, the Chain Bridge and Parliament, while to the south you can see the Liberty Bridge in its full glory.
Place to see by night
Again, this would be at the Citadel. The view from there is best after sunset, when the lights are turned on. The other would be the Parliament building from the other side of the Danube. For the best view head to the corner of Csalogány street and Bem rakpart.
The one thing you have to see
One of the thermal baths: Gellért and Széchenyi are the busiest, while Rudas and Lukács are more ppopular with locals and are less crowded.
