Mum charmed millions at Glasgow’s Games

- By Janet Boyle

THESE two adorable pups will have big paws to fill.

The cute pair have just been born to a Scottie dog mascot who captured hearts across the world leading athletes at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Their mum, Aggie, has been caring for them since they were born three weeks ago.

The seven-year-old champion show dog, who also appears in TV ads for Scotty Brand dog food, was one of 40 Scotties to take part in the athletes’ parade at Celtic Park.

Owner Carol Annan, 69, said: “I am as proud as punch. She is very much a show lady but she’s also a wonderful mum.

“Our Aggie is a great example of a Scottie so it’s no surprise her pups are, too.”

It’s the second time Aggie’s given birth to a litter. She had her first two years ago and daughter Tilly is a Scottish champion.

Carol, who is president of the Scottish Terrier Club in Scotland, even slept next to Aggie in the last days of her pregnancy in case she developed complications.

“I kept vigil in case she went into labour during the night,” Carol added.

“When she started ‘nesting’ by moving her blankets and tearing up the newspapers in her bed I knew the pups were on their way.

“I carefully transported her to the vets and let him deliver. He then called to say she’d had two.

“I wasn’t keen to allow her to have an ultrasound. I thought it would be better to let her get on with the pregnancy naturally.”

The special delivery was kept under wraps until the little bundles of fluff opened their eyes last week.

“We just wanted the pups to settle in before we broke the news,” Carol added.

“It’s been a joy to watch Aggie fuss over them, feed and clean them and tuck them in before taking a nap herself.

Carol is a show judge, well-known at Crufts. She says she spotted a potential mate for Aggie while judging. “He’s a champion who has performed well at shows and I thought they’d produce lovely pups.”

Aggie was one of the stars of the glittering Opening Ceremony.

She led out the Sierra Leone team, resplendent in her specially made tartan coat, and was rewarded with cocktail sausages for her performance. The ceremony was seen by millions of people on TV

across the globe.
