Cav makes it stage win No. 30 on Le Tour

- TOUR DE FRANCE TENNIS ANGLING

MARK CAVENDISH yesterday claimed his fourth stage win of the 2016 Tour de France and 30th of his career with victory in the Parc des Oiseaux in Villars-les-Dombes.

Cavendish came around the wheel of Marcel Kittel in the final straight and took victory ahead of Norwegian Alexander Kristoff and world champion Peter Sagan in third.

Last week Cavendish moved past Bernard Hinault in second in the all-time list of Tour stage winners and this latest success leaves him four behind the record of five-time Tour winner Eddy Merckx.

There has been speculation throughout the Tour that the Manxman would at some point withdraw to focus on preparations for racing on the track at the Rio Olympics, but with his form so strong he will also have an eye on a fifth career victory on the ChampsElysees in Paris.

Kittel, having made his move first, ended up fifth and behind fellow German John Degenkolb.

Team Sky’s Chris Froome finished safely in the pack to retain the yellow jersey.

As Cavendish crossed the line, Kittel was seen waving an arm in frustration, having felt Cavendish cut across him in the final metres.

The result remained provisional as the race jury reviewed the images. However, Cavendish’s win was soon confirmed. USE the Suspender Fry whenthefishare hammering the wee fish in the shallows leaving lots of them struggling.

HIGHLIGHT of the week at the Woodburn Trout Fishery, near Milton of Campsie, was the capture and safe return of a magnificent 13lb 8oz brown trout by Duncan McCallum from Renton.

This is the biggest brown trout to come from a small Scottish stillwater this year and was stocked as a three pounder.

MARKLE FISHERY in East Lothian is fishing well with catch-and-release producing good returns.

John Daly from Edinburgh used Bloodworms to catch six, while Darren Darling (Edinburgh) also took six on a Diawl Bach. WORLD No. 8 Tomas Berdych is the latest to pull out of the Olympics, citing concerns over the Zika virus.

Czech Republic’s Berdych, who fell to Andy Murray in the recent Wimbledon semi-finals, says his family is his “utmost priority” and will not compete in Rio.

He follows world No.7 Milos Raonic and women’s No. 5 Simona Halep in withdrawing from the Games.

Berdych said in a statement on Twitter: “I apologise to all of you who are disappointed. I do believe that if you take a deeper account of my reasons you will understand that I have done it out of the responsibility for my family.”
