Hunky Dory! Ellen’s set to top the film charts

IFthe summer blockbuster season was a boxing match then it would have been stopped by now.

We’re not even through July yet but the world-famous studio is the clear victor in terms of box office takings.

The biggest hit of the year so far is Captain America: Civil War, which was created through Marvel Studios – owned by Disney.

That’s made over £875 million, while the next movie on the list, Zootopia, has made around £800m.

And who made that? Disney, of course. It’s a witty children’s animation with talking animals and loved by adults as much as the kids.

Sounds almost like one of their classic cartoons from 40 or 50 years ago...

Which brings us to the third-highest grossing movie on the list – the live-action remake of the classic Jungle Book.

No prizes for guessing which studio produced this. So Disney are in the top three spots…but probably not for long.

They’re probably all going to get knocked off the top spot by my ITV colleague Ellen DeGeneres.

She’s starring in animation Finding Dory – the sequel to Finding Nemo – and it’ll soon have more box office receipts than there are fish in the sea.

I interviewed Ellen when ITV started showing her much-loved chat show came to ITV2 and wished her luck for Finding Dory. Looks like she didn’t need it!

The original Finding Nemo came out in 2003 and is now considered a bit of a classic – for a while it looked like the sequel would be stuck in Davey Jones’ Locker.

Yep, it’s been a long journey for this movie to arrive…so much so that Ellen, who is openly gay, said: “It took almost as to come out as I did!”

Speaking of long journeys, I just got a phone call to ask would I head to Malibu this week…sure!
