On song

IN response to John Rankin’s letter, my pals and I sang a version of this song in the 1940s. It was called Fa Widna Be A Bobby and it went:

Fa, fa, widna be a Bobby, Dressed up in ither people’s clothes, Wi’ a great big tarry hat, And a belly fu’ o’ fat, And a penny mealy jimmy for a nose.
