The best of Scotland – just a few miles from the capital

-

WHEN people think of the Lothians, most stop at Edinburgh. But just a few miles away, there’s a whole other world of things to see and do.

East Lothian boasts 40 miles of stunning coastline and beaches, as well as award-winning attractions, excellent food and drink and some of the world’s finest golf courses.

It’s a great place to explore and, with handy transport links from Edinburgh, getting there couldn’t be easier.

Make the most of the good summer weather by strolling along the coast and getting the sand between your toes on Whitesands or Revensheugh Sands beaches.

Walkers can spot seals in the water, watch surfers enjoy the waves and with the Beach Wheelchair Project, which provides children and adult wheelchairs and a beach walker free of charge at North Berwick Harbour, the beach is truly accessible to all.

Further inland, there are the Lammermuir Hills and rolling countryside to take a stroll in, with leaflets explaining the different routes available from East Lothian Council and local community groups.

Or for a closer look at the local wildlife, there are boat trips to the Bass Rock, known for its gannets, and the Isle of May, a National Nature Reserve that is home to seals, puffins and much more.

For the keen golfer, there are more than 20 links and inland courses to play, including the world-famous Open Championship course at Muirfield. And many have fantastic clubhouse facilities where you can enjoy a drink and a meal after your round.

And speaking of eating, East Lothian offers everything from good quality pub grub to fine dining, much of which uses locally-produced, fresh ingredients.

Its coastal location means East Lothian’s seafood is particularly good, and well worth a sample when you are in the area.

When it comes to shopping in East Lothian, the focus is on the customer. The locally-owned businesses offer shoppers a laid-back bit of retail therapy, and each owner takes that extra time and care to ensure they provide the right items at the right prices.

Many towns offer free parking, so there’s no need to rush back to the car before you have checked out the many boutiques and shops.

A visit to East Lothian should be top of the list of things to do this summer.
