JULY 24, 1980 After collapsing from a heart attack, actor and comedian Peter Sellers died, aged 54.

Known for his roles with The Goons and in the Pink Panther movies, he was instantly missed, with actor Richard Attenborou­gh paying tribute.

“He had the genius comparable to Chaplin,” he commented on the late star.

JULY 26, 1951 Walt Disney’s 13th animated movie, Alice In Wonderland, premiered.

Based on Lewis Carroll’s book of the same name, it was later made into a stage version and a 2010 Tim Burton film, starring Johnny Depp.

JULY 26, 1952 First Lady of Argentina, Eva Peron, aka Evita, died after a battle with cancer.

Following her campaign for female suffrage, she gained a lot of admirers and public grief at her death was intense.

A 1996 film, Evita, with Madonna in the title role, paid tribute to the influentia­l lady that she was.

JULY 27, 1907 Sir Robert Baden-Powell (above) set up the Brownsea Island Scout camp in Poole Harbour, England.

The camp is seen as the launch of the Scouting movement.

The World Scout Bureau estimate that there are now 28 million Scouts worldwide.

JULY 30, 2006 Iconic music show Top Of The Pops aired for the last time.

Having run for 42 years and been shown in nearly 100 countries at various points, the decision was made to axe the popular programme from a weekly run.

Repeats are still shown, however, on BBC4.
