Why the haste to go public with plans?
In securing the services of Townsend for Scotland, did the SRU really have to announce it now?
Even if the deal were done behind closed doors, both Cotter and Townsend still have work to do with their teams – both of them knowing that this season will be their last. It’s hardly a great way to incentivise people.
Spare a thought too, for Vern Cotter. He has done a good job with Scotland – notwithstanding the performances on tour in Japan, which weren’t Scotland’s best, but which still resulted in two wins.
It seemed that an extension to Cotter’s contract was hardly considered, which seems somewhat harsh, given how the team is beginning to find its feet in international rugby.
Make no mistake, I believe that appointing Gregor Townsend is excellent and it is great to have a Scottish coach in charge of the Scotland team – the only one of the Home Nations to have a coach from their own country.
Gregor has a great understanding of the Scottish game and has been allowed to develop his coaching credentials with Glasgow – who have been one of the most consistent sides in the Pro12 competition.
Stepping up into the international arena is another challenge, but I have no doubt that Gregor will embrace it and do well.
