Fish just go nuts for this stunning fly

- ANGLING

THE fish just love the Elk Hair Caddis when it is worked across the surface. It is tied on a size 10-14 Partridge Supreme Dry hook, using orange 14/0 sheer tying thread.

The body is olive IceDub, palmered with a cream cock hackle and ribbed with the tying thread. The pattern is finished with a wing of elk hair, tied over CDC fibres.

THE fishing has been excellent at Gleneagles’ Frandy Fishery, with the top-taking flies including the Daddy Longlegs, Kate McLaren, Bibio Hopper, Black Hopper, Sedge Muddler and the Cormorant. The best fishing areas are the Dogleg, North Shore and the dam wall.

Bob Dick & Geoff Hemmings, from Kinross, took10 fish, weighing 20lb 8oz, while Jock McKenzie & Ian Gibson (Edinburgh) bagged six fish for 14lb and released a further two.

On the club front, RAF Northern League took 40 fish, weighing 83lb, and released a further seven. Phoenix AC landed 13 fish, weighing 28lb 7oz, and released six.

THE fishing was good last week at the Howwood Fishery in Renfrewshire where large hatches of ants had the place bubbling and the fish feeding aggressively. The Front, Left Bank and Top Shallows were the hot-spots and the best flies included the CDC, Ant patterns, Half Hogs and Spiders.

Notable catch-andrelease returns include Martin Daly with 38, Stuart Pate (18), Mick Kirkwood (12), Andy Kirkwood (10), Bill Provan (10) and Joseph Wood with 10.
