AUGUST 28, 1963 During the March On Washington For Jobs And Freedom, Martin Luther King Jr delivered his I Have A Dream speech to 300,000 people. King was assassinat­ed less than five years later, but his speech led to the passing of the Civil Rights Act in 1964.

AUGUST 29, 1930 The last inhabitant­s of St Kilda were evacuated.

Today, only some military personnel and boffins live on the island.

Crop failures, illness and other reasons saw the people decide it was time to go.

AUGUST 29, 1966 Not being able to hear themselves made The Beatles decide to go too.

The Fabs completed their last concert in front of a paying audience, at Candlestic­k Park, San Francisco.

They reckoned that the fans’ screaming was a contributi­ng factor.

Still, they didn’t do badly as a studio-only outfit!

SEPTEMBER 2, 1987 As attention-seeking goes, how about landing a small Cessna plane in Red Square?

German teen Mathias Rust went on trial on this day for just that.

He’d taken off from Helsinki, Russian pilots couldn’t get permission to down him, and so he got right to the heart of Moscow.

His idea was to “build a bridge” in order to ease tensions.

SEPTEMBER 2, 1994 The much-loved Roy Castle, trumpeter, tap dancer and all-round showbiz star, died of cancer.

His Lung Cancer Foundation has done sterling work ever since – a very worthwhile legacy.
