Other flies to Fry

- ATHLETICS ANGLING

ROB DENSON’S Floating Fry pattern is dead simple to tie and is fished like a dry fly when the trout are hammering into the fry in the margins.

Simply match the fly size to the fry.

It is tied on a size 8–12 Kamasan B170 hook and the tying thread is white.

The body is Pearl Ice Dub and the back is a strip of white foam, secured at the bend and head.

THE fish are still being quite fussy at the Orchill Trout Fishery near Braco.

But a black fly with a bit of colour or some sparkle, and fished fast then slow seems to work.

John Score from Alloa took three fish for 11lb on an Orange Fritz, Davy Duncan from Slamannan had two for 8lb on an Ace of Spades and Brian Neilson from Stirling caught three for 12lb on an Orange Fritz.

IT was a cracking week at the Lawfield Fishery near Kilmacolm, with 196 fish being recorded.

Catch & release anglers have been doing particularly well, with Alan Jones from Port Glasgow taking 19, and Eddie Dunbar from Barrhead and John Queen of Elderslie both hooking 12.

A wide variety of fly patterns have been successful, including the CDC Sedge, Diawl Bach, Damsels and Rabbits. GREG RUTHERFORD won his first competition since landing Olympic long jump bronze in Rio as the Strictly Come Dancing star returned to the day job at the Great North CityGames.

The 29-year-old, squeezing the street athletics event on the Newcastle-Gateshead quayside in between six-hour dance training sessions, leapt out to a modest 7.66 metres to take victory.

“More people seem to be interested in Strictly than jumping,” he said. “Hopefully there will be a crossover and more take an interest in field athletics.”

Laura Muir finished a breakthrough season with victory over a mile, the 1500m Diamond Race winner coming home first in four minutes 33.99 seconds. The Scot has broken the British 1500m record twice this year.

Compatriot Lynsey Sharp triumphed in the rarely-run 500m, clocking 1min 6.62secs, while in the men’s race Kenya’s David Rudisha won in 57.69s.

James Dasaolu edged out Chijindu Ujah by one hundredth of a second to win the 100m in 10.21 secs.
