- 27

1. Look out for the many bars with happy hours, including chain TGI Fridays where you can get a plate laden with goodies for $8 and a wine or beer for $3.50.

2. Save 40% on admission to six of the city’s top attractions including the Empire State and the Statue Of Liberty using the New York CityPass (www.citypass.com/new-york).

3. And note that the pass will give you a same-day, night-time admission to the Empire State. So you can go back and get a free second look, this time at the sparkling lights after dark.

4. For unlimited transport on both subway and buses, get a week’s Metro Card for $30.

5. An airport bus into Manhattan from JFK is just $17. If there are three or four of you, a metered yellow cab will cost about $60 to arrive in style.

6. The marvellous New York Public Library with its famous lions facing Fifth Avenue is one of the city’s great free attractions. They answer some six million queries a year.

7. Get up to 50% off Broadway show tickets on the day at the TKTS office in Times Square.

8. The best free ride in the city is the Staten Island ferry, as the 20-minute journey offers fantastic views. When boarding from Manhattan you want to be on the outside deck to the right to see the Statue Of Liberty and to the left on the way back.

9. Get another amazing free panorama of the city as you cross the wooden boardwalk in the centre of the Brooklyn Bridge over the East River.

10. Don’t splash out on data packages for your phone. There’s free WiFi just about everywhere including the subway.
