Scotland’s dangerous escapees

-

ROSS isn’t the only dangerous prisoner to be involved in an escape alert.

A total of 44 prisoners absconded from Scotland’s prisons between 2010 and 2014.

Many simply walked out of jail or failed to return after being granted home leave.

But there have also been more notorious breakouts.

Murderer Donald Forbes escaped from a maximum security wing of Peterhead Prison in 1971. The move saw him branded Scotland’s most dangerous man.

He was recaptured and transferred to Barlinnie but tried to escape again two years later, using a hacksaw to cut open the lock on his cell door.

Brian “The Hawk” Martin, convicted of endangering a man’s life by firing a shotgun, absconded from Castle Huntly in 2009.

And hammer killer Peter Connelly, 42, went on the run from Shotts in 2008 while on an escorted visit in Glasgow.
