Paddy could be the Cats’ perfect 10

DAVID MOYES reckons Paddy McNair could be the perfect 10 for Sunderland.

The Northern Ireland international – a £4.5million signing by Moyes from Manchester United in August – complained that former Old Trafford boss Louis van Gaal played him in the wrong position.

Van Gaal pressed McNair, 21, into centre-back duties, but he scored his first senior goals in an attacking midfield role when he struck twice in Sunderland’s 2-1 midweek EFL Cup win at QPR.

Black Cats boss Moyes, who had McNair under his wing when in charge of United, is aware he played as a No. 10 in his youth career.

And Moyes admitted: “It’s realistic that we could look at him playing there again.

“I see him playing more as a central midfielder, one of the three in the middle or one of two. He has a wee bit of youthfulness. He’s a big runner, he’s got big energy.

“I have to find the best role for him. His best role just now might not be his best role in six months.

“He can play in three or four positions and that was part of the reason he was interesting to us.

“But I do think he’s a better attacking midfielder than he is doing any other jobs at this moment in time.”
