Giggsy has a real chance to be a top manager

-

BEING a great player doesn’t always guarantee that you’ll be a top manager.

We’ve seen plenty of high-profile stars fail when they make the switch from pitch to dug-out.

But I think Ryan Giggs has a real chance of making it big as a boss.

Last week he was being touted as a future manager of Swansea.

That might not happen in the short term but I’m sure he’ll get his chance sooner or later.

Some people feel he’s maybe too quiet, too softly spoken to take charge of a team.

I think those critics are living in the past.

The days of the hardman boss have gone.

Communication with players and getting them to trust you is vital these days.

Whether we like it or not, top players in England are now multi-millionaires and they won’t stand for the old-style sergeant-major approach.

Players will quickly tell the manager, any manager, to talk to their agent if they feel they’re being picked on.

It’s fine to criticise someone if they’re well out of order, but you can’t do it on a regular basis.
