Weird creatures on the shore

-

TWO glow-in-the-dark sea creatures that look like slugs have been found in Scotland.

Conservationists Eileen Armstrong and James Merryweather discovered the rare invertebrates, called Lancelets, on a beach on Skye.

The slippery critters were flapping about on the shore after they’d wriggled out of the ground during low tide.

One burrowed back under almost immediately but biologist James managed to get a photo of the other one.

Eileen said: “It’s really exciting. We’re trying to find out just how rare they are.”

The weird animals, which grow up to 8cm long, have no brain, bones, heart or eyes and look like a blob of pointed jelly.

And scientists have found that they emit a green light that is invisible to the human eye.

The light is emitted by proteins in the animal that are thought to protect it from harmful ultraviolet light.
