Reid: Murray will always be my No. 1
ANDY MURRAY does not need to become World No. 1 to be any more of an inspiration to Paralympic star Gordon Reid.
2016 has undoubtedly been the best year of Murray’s career with six titles including his second Wimbledon crown and his second gold medal at the Olympics.
But arguably, wheelchair tennis ace Reid has had an even better one.
He matched Murray’s effort at Wimbledon and then took gold in singles and silver in doubles at the Paralympics in Rio, as well as winning the Australian Open in January.
However, 25-year-old Reid will always appreciate what Andy has done for tennis in Scotland.
“Andy is a big inspiration for me and I have followed his career since I was young,” he says.
“You grow up watching that and think, ‘Why can’t I do that as well?’
“Andy is on a roll right now. It’s six titles this year and it’s phenomenal what he has been doing. It will be tough to end the year as World No. 1 but there is a chance it will happen next year.
“I’ve met him a few times and we see each other at the Grand Slams. I think he is starting to enjoy wheelchair tennis more.
“I know a few of the Davis Cup boys were watching our matches in Rio when they were in Glasgow for the semi against Argentina.
“Itwasgreattheywere watching us because we need the support of those guys to help grow our sport.”
