10 things you must do in Vienna
JUST RELAX
Cafes are a huge part of Viennese culture. Chill out at historic Zum Schwarzen Kameel, Bognergasse 5.
COUNT ’EM
See some (!) of the 2500 rooms in the Imperial Palace.
SHOP TILL YOU DROP
The ‘Golden Quarter’ has every big designer name.
JUST THE TICKET
Take Trams 1 and 2 (change at the Opera and Schwedenplatz) and you’ll see all the main sights for a couple of euros.
STREET SNACKS
For a tasty, cheap treat buy a ‘Bitzinger’ sausage from stalls at Albertinaplatz or the Great Ferris Wheel.
CLASSICAL DRESSAGE
Book ahead and go to the Spanish Riding School to see the beautiful Lippizaner horses strut their stuff. Magical.
WORK IN PROGRESS
Whenever I visit Vienna, Stephansdom – the city’s main church and symbol – is under scaffolding. You might have more luck!
MUST-SEE MARKET
If you only go to one Christmas market make it the one in front of the Rathaus.
TIPPLE TIP
Vienna grows more wine than any other city in Europe but rarely exports any, so take advantage while you’re there.
CHOCAHOLIC’S DREAM
Enjoy a slice of Sachertorte at the Sacher Hotel. A great treat!
