All hail older calender girls
TIME was when the annual Pirelli calendar of young, beautiful girls made us feel inadequate. But this year, there’s been a change.
The new issue of the Pirelli calendar features the older woman. From 49-yearold Nicole Kidman to 70-year-old Charlotte Rampling and 71-year-old Helen Mirren, it celebrates mature women in all their diversity.
There’s less posing and pouting – instead we have women with thoughtful expressions and lived-in faces. Excellent.
Mind you, all of them are women of achievement. Film stars, actresses with faces and bodies that are rather striking to start with.
The photographs haven’t been re-touched and, although we see the odd wrinkle and age spot, they still look very attractive.
But it’s welcome news that a mature woman is still reckoned to be worth looking at.
For too long a woman over 50 was considered past her best. Now we realise she’s just hitting her prime.
These feisty females have blazed a trail over the years by their achievements.
Why shouldn’t we celebrate them?
