Ramos levels late on for Real Madrid

-

REAL MADRID maintained their six-point lead at the top of La Liga as Sergio Ramos’ last-minute header snatched a point in the Clasico against Barcelona.

Barca took the lead in a disappointing contest through Luis Suarez’s 53rd-minute header, and had chances to double their advantage through Neymar and Lionel Messi.

But Luka Modric picked out Ramos with an inswinging free-kick from the left and he headed powerfully past Marc-Andre Ter Stegen to secure a point for the visitors and extend their unbeaten run to 33 matches in all competitions.

Sevilla wasted a chance to climb to second as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat at Andalusian neighbours Granada in the early kick-off.

Andreas Pereira swept the home side in front in the 27th minute before David Lomban added a second 12 minutes into the second period, tapping home at the far post after a Pereira corner.

Substitute Wissam Ben Yedder scored an injury-time penalty with the last kick as Granada’s first win of the season at the 14th attempt moved them off the bottom of the table.

Champions League-chasing Villarreal were held to a goalless draw at struggling Leganes.

The visitors failed to generate much in the way of clear-cut opportunities but the draw was at least enough to lift them above Real Sociedad, who play on Monday, into fifth place in La Liga.

Leganes, who had won just once in their last previous six league matches, created a few chances but were happier with the point as it edged them slightly further away from the bottom three.

Martin Mantovani and Luciano Neves had shots saved, while Unai Bustinza directed a header wide as the hosts began promisingly.

Villarreal came back into the game in the latter stages with Alexandre Pato off-target with his effort, while Roberto Soriano’s shot was saved just before the break.

Leganes goalkeeper Iago Herrerin pulled off a good save to deny Samu Castillejo’s shot while Sergio Asenjo did similarly to keep out Victor Diaz’s effort from distance.
