THE SFA rejected an approach by Rangers to speak to national team manager Walter Smith (above).

Smith was wanted by the Ibrox club to replace Frenchman Paul Le Guen.

He resigned from his post and agreed to a second spell as Rangers’ boss.

DEREK PARLANE returned from injury to score twice in Rangers’ 3-0 victory over Kilmarnock.

Alex O’Hara got the Ibrox side’s other goal.

Johnny Doyle hit a late winner for Celtic as they beat Dundee United 2-1 at Tannadice.

Tom McAdam (above) had equalised for the Tangerines after Kenny Dalglish put Celtic ahead.

Second Division Cardiff City knocked Tottenham Hotspur out of the FA Cup.

Peter Sayer scored the only goal of the game.

CELTIC put down a blanket of straw on their pitch to allow the league game against Dundee to beat a big freeze.

The Hoops won 5-1 with goals from Bobby Murdoch, Willie Wallace (2), Jimmy Johnstone (above) and Charlie Gallagher.

Dundee United recorded their fourth successive win by beating Ayr United 4-0.

Orjan Persson, Finn Dossing, Jackie Graham and Ian Mitchell were on target.

The 13th minute proved unlucky for Third Lanark when a goal from Brian Begg, of Brechin City, knocked them out of the Scottish Cup.

Spurs beat Arsenal 2-0 with goals from Scots Alan Gilzean and Jimmy Robertson.
