Call The Midwife: The Casebook
BBC1, 5.05pm, today
Stephen McGann, better known to Call The Midwife viewers as Dr. Patrick Turner, presents a look at the true stories behind the drama.
He meets midwives, nuns and doctors who worked delivering babies during the ’50s and ’60s to hear their accounts of the social and medical changes of the period.
He talks to a former colleague of Jennifer Worth, writer of the Call The Midwife books, and a photographer who documented social conditions of the time and meets a nun who became a midwife and subsequently left orders to have a child of her own.
Stephen also returns to the home where he was born to share his mother’s story of childbirth.
