The Sunday Post (Dundee)

How could anyone act like this?

-

THE Office of Scottish Charity Regulator has banned two men from ever running charities after a Sunday Post investigation.

It was utterly scandalous that these men felt they could take huge sums of money while providing a pittance in charitable donations.

Every right-minded person who hands over money to a good cause expects the majority of that money to do good – not find its way into the pockets of people who enjoy a comfortable lifestyle paid for by such donations and other income.

The money being donated was supposed to help kids in Africa, not used to pay exorbitant sums to these individuals

Did these men not think of that as they drove their fancy cars or watched horse racing in luxurious surroundings?

The other side of the coin is that many charities do sterling work.

And the last thing that should happen is that genuine groups are tainted by the actions of these men.

There has to be robust regulation in place to prevent that, so any charitable organisation should be open to scrutiny by the regulator.

But it would be a pity if the good guys were caught up in so much red tape that it affected their work.

It’s a tough balance to strike, but if bad apples are to thrown out of the barrel then each one has to be examined.
