SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY 2 Wallace (54), Forestieri (90) HUDDERSFIELD TOWN 0

-

A SENSATIONAL goal from Ross Wallace and a close-range finish from Fernando Forestieri gave Sheffield Wednesday a crucial victory over promotion rivals Huddersfield, who had Jack Payne sent off.

In the second minute, Town missed a golden opportunity to take the lead as Nahki Wells headed Tommy Smith’s cross straight into the arms of keeper Kieren Westwood.

Wallace opened the scoring in the 54th minute with an unstoppable strike from 35 yards into the top corner.

With 20 minutes to go, Huddersfield were reduced to 10 men as Payne was given a straight red card for a reckless high challenge on Wednesday’s Sam Hutchinson.

Substitute Joe Lolley came close for Town in the 76th minute after a mazy run and strike forced a save from Westwood. Michael Hefele then tried his luck with a towering header, but again Westwood was equal to it.

Hefele was pushed up front in search of an equaliser and was immediately unlucky to see a strike go just wide.

In added time, though, Forestieri sealed the game when he tapped in from close range.
