McGhee left speechless by defeat

MARK McGHEE admitted he was left devastated by the manner of Motherwell’s defeat at Ibrox

“I’m sorry, you are not going to get a lot out of me because I am near to speechless,” he told reporters.

“In my 900-odd games as a manager I have only ever felt as bad as this twice before.

“Once was at Millwall when we lost in the play-offs (to a last minute Birmingham City goal) and the other time was with Wolves when we lost to Crystal Palace in the playoffs (again to late scores).

“They are the only games that match how I am feeling right now.

“It was more the mistakes than anything else. The second goal (a mistake from Stephen McManus) is ludicrous.

“It’s just hard, hard, hard to take. I am gobsmacked to be honest.

“Nobody has said anything after the game, nobody had anything to say.

“I’ve said to them what I’ve just said to you.

“They were the only words that were spoken. I couldn’t speak for half an hour.”

His disappointment was echoed by one of his players, Craig Clay.

“Like the manager, I am lost for words,” he said.

“You never think any game is won but we worked hard as a team and I reckon we deserved at least a replay.

“They had a bit of possession but they’d never really hurt us. We were set up well and the least we deserved was a replay.”

The one positive the attacker could take was that Motherwell will get a quick chance for revenge.

“The good thing is we have Rangers again next week.

“It won’t be much consolation because we wanted to do well in the cup but we have the chance to make amends right away in the league.

“We have to pick ourselves up and be ready for that game.”

He meanwhile had some words of support for his teammate McManus over the error that allowed Kenny Miller in to score Rangers winner.

“People make mistakes and you can’t blame individuals,” he said.
