Lichtiesshocked by Annan one-two

-

The home side took the lead in the 12th minute after a flowing move which started with goalkeeper Ricky Gomes’ quick throw out and ended with a great Bobby Linn run and cross into the danger area, which Steven Doris turned into the net.

The Lichties continued to dominate with Linn, Eddie Ferns, Omar Kader and Ryan McCord all coming close to extending the lead.

But there was a shock for the home side in the 39th minute when Darren Ramsey equalised from the penalty spot after Nathan Flanagan was brought down in the box.

Arbroath continued to press in the second half but were caught out again in the 68th minute when Raffi Kristian rose to head home from a corner to give Annan the lead.

Blair Currie came to the visitors rescue when blocking a net-bound Linn volley as the Lichties piled on more pressure, with the keeper again the hero when saving from McCord.

There was drama in the final minute when Currie saved from Martin Scott, with Arbroath claiming the ball had crossed the line. However, referee Scott Millar turned down their appeals.

MONTROSE 2 COWDENBEATH 1

MONTROSE picked up a so-vital victory when they held on to beat Cowdenbeath, despite finishing the game with nine men.

Both sides had chances in an even first half, then Montrose took the lead in 36 minutes. Andy Steeves swung in a free-kick and the ball came off the head of Gerry McLauchlan for an own goal.

Cowdenbeath missed a great opportunity to equalise in 50 minutes. Craig Johnston hit the post from a Lewis Moore cross and, when play continued, Dean Brett was brought down for a penalty. Kris Renton had his spot-kick brilliantly saved by Jordan Millar.

Cowdenbeath dominated the second half but failed to score.

Montrose were reduced to 10 men in 80 minutes when Matty Smith collected a second booking for a challenge on Shaun Rutherford.

The Montrose defence was finally breached in 85 minutes. Brett got the break of the ball and sent a dipping shot over the heroic Millar.

Montrose went back in front in 89 minutes. Gary Fraser was brought down by McLauchlan on the edge of the box and got up to smash the ball home from the spot.

Fraser then foolishly picked up a second booking for celebrating with the home fans and was red-carded.

Deep into added time, Millar made a superb diving save to deny Moore.
