The serious questions Moyes must answer

-

AFTER being hand-picked by Sir Alex Ferguson to take charge at Manchester United, it looked like Davie Moyes was heading for the stars.

Just four years later, the Sunderland boss finds himself skirting unemployment.

There is no point dressing it up – Davie has endured a dreadful time of it since leaving Everton. He will know that himself.

His dream job at Old Trafford quickly turned into a nightmare.

His rebound gig at Real Sociedad was another disaster.

Now he’s involved in a battle to keep Sunderland in the Premier League.

After 15 unbroken years on the rise with Preston North End and Everton, the last few have been a terrifying plummet back down to earth for the big Scot.

At some point over the last four years, Davie Moyes will have asked himself a similar set of questions. But I still believe he has the answers. I don’t care what anyone says, Davie did a remarkable job at Everton.

For more than a decade, he kept them fighting at the top end of the Premier League on a fraction of the big boys’ budgets.

Now he is fighting for his reputation – and possibly his career.

Given the situation he inherited at the Stadium of Light, it’s a fight he will have to undertake with one hand tied behind his back.

But I know Davie. He’s a Glasgow boy and a proud Scot. He won’t give up.

Some Black Cats fans I’ve spoken to reckon their side is destined for the drop. But if they can hang on to Jermain Defoe – and if they can add one or two in key areas – they are in with a fighting chance.

Swansea City are gone as concerned. So are Hull City.

So it’s between Sunderland, Crystal Palace, Middlesbrough, Watford, and maybe even Leicester City for the final relegation spot.

I’d urge Sunderland fans to keep the faith with Davie.

He’s got the experience and he’s got the heart to get his team out of the situation they are in.

If he manages it, he won’t get the credit he got for the work he did at Everton – but he will deserve it.
