KILMARNOCK 0 HAMILTON 1 Bingham (pen, 90)

-

RAKISH BINGHAM scored a last-gasp penalty to send Hamilton into the next round of the Scottish Cup and hand Martin Canning’s men their first win in 12 games.

Kilmarnock are now without a win in seven attempts and have scored just four goals in their last 11 outings, so it was no surprise the home fans were booing at full-time.

Canning praised Bingham, who insisted he take the spot kick after Karleigh Osborne had upended Grant Gillespie.

“Dougie Imrie was down to take the penalty but big Rakish was so confident and demanded the ball,” said Canning.

“It’s not an issue because he scored but it might have been different if he’s missed it.

“Football is all about belief. We already have the quality and, if we can add confidence to that, we can have a good second half of the season.

“So, we go through to the next round and we want to do well in this competition.

“I thought we were the better team over the 90 minutes. It’s nice to get a win again, especially in these circumstances because we’ve been on the receiving end of a lot of late goals this season.”

Both sides were too often sloppy in possession and it was an often lethargic game.

Bitterly-disappointed Killie boss Lee Clark defended his decision to hand debuts to five players and leave the likes of Souleymane Coulibaly, Stevie Smith and Kris Boyd on the bench.

Clark said: “We’ve gone out with a whimper and we’ve made bad decisions at the back and weren’t good enough in the final third.

“Overall, we need more from our forward players and our crosses need to be better. We need to create more and stop hitting the first man from cross balls.”
