Village in shock after ‘vicious’ shop attack

- By Rachel Wearmouth

POLICE are hunting a “loitering man” who left a woman for dead following a sickening attack at a village shop.

The man is being sought by police following the incident at the shop in quiet Windygates in Fife.

The 30-year-old victim was left “covered in blood” following the “vicious” attack inside the convenience shop.

According to residents, the outlet is run by an Asian couple.

The woman was apparently planning to visit family in Pakistan in the coming weeks “as her mum had not yet met her son and daughter”.

The incident – which is being treated as an attempted murder – is understood to be a domestic incident, according to police sources.

Detective Inspector Paul Dick said: “We are currently investigating this vicious attack and are eager to trace the man responsible as soon as possible.

“I would appeal to those who may have been either within the village shop or in the immediate area near to the time of the attack to come forward as they may have seen the man enter the premises or loitering about.

“I would urge anyone who has information, including those using public transport in the wider Fife area on Friday, to get in touch with police immediately.”

The victim was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy.

She was spotted outside the shop “covered in blood” in the aftermath of the attack.

People in the quiet area told The Sunday Post of their shock.

A local resident, who did not want to be named, said: “My son went to the shop to get some juice and there was a big crowd.

“He saw the lassie coming out and she was covered in blood. There were police everywhere. Everyone was shocked.”

Another local added: “We’ve heard it was a nasty attack with a weapon.

“She is a lovely lassie and she has a couple of little ones.

“I think she lives with her husband in one of the flats. We hope she is OK.”

A police presence remained at the premises for hours following the incident. Workers at the shop were reluctant to speak about the assault.

Officers said nothing was taken from the store during the attack, which happened at around 6pm on Friday.

The attacker is Asian, in his early 30s with thinning hair.

He was wearing a black bomber jacket and black trousers.
