AYR UTD 1 Cairney (70) CLYDE 1 Gormley (55)

-

CLYDE earned a replay at Broadwood on Tuesday evening thanks to a heroic display from debut keeper Connor Quinn.

Signed from Livingston only 24 hours before kick-off to replace the banned John Gibson, Quinn pulled off a string of saves to make in an uncomfortable afternoon for Ayr.

A real shock looked on the cards when David Gormley fired Clyde ahead in 55 minutes and Sean Higgins hit the post soon after.

But Ayr got out of jail when Paul Cairney forced home a Brian Gilmour corner for the equaliser.

Cairney thought he had won it late on with a shot, only for Quinn to pull off another flying save.

Chuffed Bully Wee boss Barry Ferguson claimed: “We came here to try and win and went close.”

Declan McDaid was an Ayr livewire in only his second start. Three times in the first-half he was foiled by Quinn’s alertness, on the last occasion being frustrated with only the keeper to beat.

The Bully Wee scored 10 minutes after the break when Gormley curled a shot from eight yards into the bottom corner.

And they came close to a second goal eight minutes later when Higgins cracked a shot off the post.

Clyde, dreaming of a cup upset, could do nothing to stop Cairney stabbing home from a Gilmour corner to level with 20 minutes to go.
