A RARE gold medal awarded by the Hong Kong authoritie­s to those who helped deal with a bubonic plague epidemic 123 years ago is set to fetch up to £8000 at auction.

More than 2500 people died following the outbreak in May 1894.

Nurse Elizabeth F Higgin was awarded the medal for the role she played helping to contain the outbreak.
