Let spring shrubs flower before cutting back, sawing off old wood close to the trunk and removing a third of the stems. Congested and overgrown shrubs can be renovated over several years and by tackling the job just after flowering there’s still time for the plant to make fresh wood that will mature to produce flowers the following spring.
