1975 FROZEN IN TIME
BARCELONA have a mountain to climb in the Champions League after their 4-0 defeat to Paris St Germain in midweek.
But they can take some inspiration from their fiercest rivals, Real Madrid.
Back in 1975, they visited the Baseball Ground in the European Cup and appeared to be sunk by Brian Clough’s Derby County.
A Charlie George hat-trick, two of them penalties, helped the English champions to a 4-1 victory, so the second leg in the Bernabeu seemed a formality. Real, however, had other ideas. They were two up by half-time, and although Real’s third, 10 minutes after the re-start, put them ahead in the tie on away goals, another Charlie George goal gave the Rams the initiative.
But a late penalty for the hosts meant extra-time and it was Real who found the crucial goal for a 5-1 win to send 120,000 locals wild.
