Dan’s Rock to overcome his penalty

- By reg Moore

WINNING a novice event with a penalty is not easy for a younger racehorse. But Dan Skelton’s Shantou Rock could easily be up to the job.

Certainly, the Alcester trainer has found himself a very soft race for the grade, almost on his Warwickshire doorstep at Southwell.

Two second-placings over hurdles started to give Shantou Rock the appearance of a nearly horse, difficult to win with and frustrating.

But last time, at Ludlow, he made no mistake when a six-length winner from Majestic Touch and he can build on that.

Rocky Two should take advantage of the drop down to selling company, after failing to stay two-and-ahalf miles last time.

His penultimate run at Wetherby, when beaten half-a-length by El Massivo, is form that will be more than good enough today.

Two months ago, Philip Kirby’s son of Rock Of Gibraltar was running off marks in the mid-100s but for today he has slipped down to 92.

Jonjo O’Neill’s namesake son has been hugely impressive in his early efforts, despite bearing the name of one of racing’s all-time greats.

His 7lb claim off Kelvingrove could help him to his biggest win yet, in the staying handicap hurdle, after possibly needing the run last time.
