‘Mortal’ McGhee will fight on

MARK McGHEE has vowed to fight on as Motherwell boss in the face of protests from fans.

Supporters reacted angrily to the Steelmen suffering another heavy defeat and called for the manager to go.

Just 10 days after losing seven goals at Pittodrie, the Steelmen were 5-1 down at half-time against Dundee yesterday.

Around 50 Fir Park’ supporters left the ground at the break and, with the help of a loudhailer, called for the manager’s sacking.

The man in the firing line accepted he is under pressure. He said: “I understand what the supporters are saying and I’m not arrogant enough to think I’m immortal.

“Losing 7-2 to Aberdeen then 5-1 to Dundee does put me under pressure.

“But it doesn’t change my desire to do the job.”

Motherwell had Northern Irishman Stephen Robinson back in the dugout after his return to the club as firstteam coach.

However, there was little he or anyone else could do as a young home defence performed a first-half collapse.

McGhee believes that injuries have played a big part in his team leaking so many goals.

Ben Heneghan was the senior man in the back four at the age of 23. McMillan and Jules are both 19, Chalmers is 22.

McGhee went on: “With the absence of Richard Tait, Stephen McManus and Stevie Hammell, those were the players we had.

“Every time the ball went into our box it looked like they were going to score and most of the time they did.”

Motherwell are now just two points above the relegation play-off spot and their next game, against Kilmarnock, will be massive.

McGhee took some comfort from his side not conceding in the second half against Dundee,

He said: “Next week we hope to have Tait and Hammell back. We moved Carl McHugh back to centrehalf and he’s played there before, so that would be an option.

“If we went into the Kilmarnock game with a back four of Tait, Heneghan, McHugh and Hammell we’d be harder to beat.”
