WILLIE WALLACE has paid tribute to his former Celtic team-mate and fellow-Lisbon Lion Tommy Gemmell.

The 76-year-old, known as Wispy in his playing days, saw Gemmell only a few weeks ago on a brief visit to Scotland from his base in Queensland, Australia.

The former striker, who was a coach at Dens Park while Gemmell was Dundee manager, said: “It is very sad to hear of the passing of my close friend TG.

“I was fortunate enough to speak to him two weeks ago while back in Scotland, and to spend a little time with him.

“He will be sadly missed by myself and family as we have many, many fond memories of our friendship with Tommy and his family.

“I know Tommy will be always remembered by Celtic Football Club and the supporters as he played a huge part in the success of the team.

“His many goals in important matches are well recorded, and are up there with the great achievements of Celtic.

“Sincere condolences to his wife Mary from myself, my wife Olive and all our family here in Australia.

“I will miss the Big Man. May he rest in peace.”

Gemmell will make his final bow at Celtic Park on Friday.

The Lisbon Lion’s funeral procession will leave Parkhead at 11.30am on its way to Daldowie Crematorium in Uddingston.

A family friend said: “It was one of Tommy’s final wishes to go back to Celtic Park one last time.

“It is a marvellous gesture from Celtic Football Club and greatly appreciated by his wife Mary, family and friends.”

A huge turn-out is expected for one of the club’s most popular players.

European Cup-winning team-mate Bertie Auld, now 78, said: “Parkhead was always Big Tommy’s spiritual home. He was a Celtic man through and through. The club and the supporters meant everything to him.

“It is fitting he will get this last opportunity to go to the stadium where he gave so many people so much pleasure.”
