How to lose your cravings

- By Emma Hayley Rinaldi

Do you dream about chocolate every night, or pine for your favourite fried foods? our sister publication, No. 1 magazine, looks at what your cravings really say about your health, with some suggestions which might help you shake them off.

Sweet and sour

SADLY, craving a sweet treat is not an indication that your body has a chocolate deficiency. It may mean that your system is lacking magnesium, a mineral that is vital for healthy skin and hair. Chocolate is high in magnesium, so if you’re visiting the vending machine at work for sugary snacks more often than in the past, it could indicate that your levels are low. Studies also show that magnesium levels will drop in the second half of your menstrual cycle, meaning women often crave sugar during this time. If you find yourself craving chocolate round the clock and aren’t sure how to cut back, try swapping your normal bar for a few pieces of dark chocolate as they contain fewer calories.

Kick the caffeine habit

IF you’re lost without your regular caffeine fix, or guzzling fizzy drinks at a rapid rate, it could be your body’s way of telling you that it’s dehydrated rather than simply tiredness. Instead of opting for a cappuccino or a glass of cola, try to ensure you’re drinking the recommended eight to 10 glasses of water a day, which will ensure you’re well hydrated. This craving can also be a sign that you’re lacking in salt and iron. Try eating tomato, celery or olives, and when it comes to upping iron levels, opt for more red meat and dark leafy vegetables.

A frying shame

A constant craving for fried foods can mean your body is crying out for healthy fats, especially if you’ve been trying to cut fat out of your diet in a bid to lose weight. Healthy fats are found in foods such as avocados and cashew nuts. Also, Omega-3 fatty acids have been proven to lower the risk of illnesses, such as heart disease and arthritis, so it’s important that you include these in your diet. And it’s also time to ditch those cheeseburgers and French fries. To enjoy more Omega-3 in your diet, try raw walnuts, wild salmon and flaxseed oil.
