Oscar mix-up like a Scottish Cup draw mess
SOwho says the Academy Awards are dull?
We could have another awards show based entirely on the brilliant 2017 ceremony.
It had it all – glamour, laughs, speeches, politics, brilliant music, a plucky underdog overcoming the odds and, of course, an incredible twist.
That’s before we get to the fantastic acting from the producers of La La Land as they graciously handed back the award for Best Picture!
It’ll go down in history as one of the most incredible moments at the Oscars of all time.
We like to laugh at ourselves when we can’t get a Scottish Cup draw right – but it just goes to show you that even the biggest show on earth has its hiccups.
What a drama the envelope mix-up turned into. The high-flying accountancy firm PriceWaterhouseCoopers, whose job it was to oversee all the voting, quickly tried to correct the error and, fair play to them, they did it speedily and apologised profusely afterwards.
It’s a bit embarrassing for them given a member of the firm was quoted in the days leading up to the awards saying how much they valued being accurate. Ouch! There was a lot of hand-wringing and blame being flung about afterwards – but I think in years to come, we’ll look back on the Oscars in 2017 not as a farce, but as an amusing and almost welcome hiccup.
If you think about it, the crowd-pleasing musical was given the wee statue only for it to be wrenched away and handed to a brilliant low-budget drama – you couldn’t make it up.
The surprise in a way was quite a pleasant one.
Can you imagine if the mix-up had been the other way around and the team from Moonlight had to hand over the Oscar to the hot favourite?
Full credit to the La La Land team as well. Afterwards, the Moonlight producers were full of praise for the grace they’d shown in handing the award over.
Now that’s how you show class under pressure.
The whole thing was such a dramatic spectacle I didn’t even mind Moonlight ruining my Oscars coupon!
