I’ve got my hearing back, for the cost of just a few pints!”

- By ANN WINCHESTER HEALTH REPORT

Charlie couldn’t face a

bulky hearing aid Charlie lost all of his confidence until he discovered the MICRO Ampli-Ear.

“The device is brilliant!”

CHARLIE had enjoyed a long career working as a postman, he loved staying active, getting out and about and meeting people. Outside of work he loved the simple things in life, spending time with his grandchildren, going for a pint with his old mates, watching sport on TV and holidays in Spain with his wife Margaret.

Charlie said he was first aware of his hearing problems just before he retired. “My mate Steve was calling out my name in the street, he said he was shouting at the top of his voice but it was only when he was just 5 yards away that I finally heard him. We had a laugh about it, he said I was “mutt ‘n’ jeff” (deaf ). But the problem had been niggling me for a while. My wife Margaret was always telling me to turn down the telly. And when she put it on I struggled to hear a word.”

Using a mobile phone had also become a problem. “My whole family take the mickey out of me when I’m on my mobile. They say I shout so loud that I can be heard in the next street – my sons were always mimicking me. I knew they were right, as there was a big difference between using it with my left ear and my right ear. I definitely had big problems hearing with my right ear.” So what did you do about it I asked. “Nothing, I shrugged it off. Margaret kept pestering me to get my ears seen to, but there was no way on earth I was going to wear one of those bulky hearing aids, I couldn’t face feeling old and falling apart. And the thought of bumping into people I knew while wearing one horrified me.”

I was keen to know what made him try the MICRO Ampli-Ear. “One day we had a family barbie, my youngest grandson sat on my knee and said “Grandad, Nanny says you’ve gone deaf. Does this mean I have to shout when I talk to you?” I laughed it off, but it did bring a lump to my throat. Later that evening Margaret showed me an ad for MICRO Ampli-Ear, she asked me to give it a try, just once, after all it was less than £20 and also had a 3-month trial period.”

“I gave in, I knew I had to do something about it. The device looked very small in the ad, but I was a bit sceptical, I thought the photo was touched up and that it was probably going to be massive.”

So how was it? “As soon as it arrived I gave it a go, I couldn’t believe how small it was – technology has moved on from those old-fashioned things you see people wearing. The minute I put it in my ear it was incredible, every sound became so much louder and crystal clear and no longer muffled. I could hear the kettle on, and when Margaret asked how it was, I told her to stop shouting! She laughed.”

What did it feel like? “It was weird at first, but so small I could hardly feel it. And looking in the mirror at different angles it was hardly noticeable. I wore it for just a few hours each day the first week, at home, just to get used to it. The biggest difference I noticed was the volume on the TV, I used to have it on level 31, but with the MICRO Ampli-Ear I could hear perfectly well at level 19. Margaret was dancing around the living room when I told her.” “The second week I wore it all day, every day. And out with the lads on Friday night I felt like my old self again, no longer pretending that I’d heard what they said, or always asking ‘what was that?”

Would you recommend the MICRO Ampli-Ear to your friends? “Definitely, I’ve told them about it, I was a right idiot for ignoring the problem for so long. This device is brilliant, it’s given me back my confidence, I no longer feel left out. Margaret no longer nags me about the TV volume and my lads no longer take the mickey! The crazy thing is, it’s so cheap, I’ve got my hearing back all for the cost of a few pints!”
