Andy’s delight over the Auld Enemy clash

- By Brian Fowlie sport@sundaypost.com

ANDY ROBERTSON is doubly delighted that Scotland’s World Cup qualifying bid is still alive.

The Hull City full-back is desperate to have another meaningful match against England.

Robertson was devastated when injury meant he missed the “Battle of Britain” fixture at Wembley last November.

He scored against England at Celtic Park in 2014 when Roy Hodgson’s side ran out 3-1 winners in a friendly.

The goal was only a consolation, although it gave Scotland a glimmer of hope by making it 2-1 with seven minutes still to play.

Robertson was part of the Scotland team that beat Slovenia at Hampden last Sunday night.

That was a “must-win” game and it will be exactly the same when England come north on June 10.

It gives Robertson the chance to face the Auld Enemy in a competitive encounter and score a goal that will really count.

He said: “We’re back in contention in the group, which is the most important thing.

“I was gutted to miss the last England game because of injury. But the last time I played against them provided great memories for me – and my mum and dad – with the goal.

“Hopefully, I can replicate that in the next game – only this time it’ll be a winning goal rather than just a consolation.”

Just over 20,000 fans turned up to watch Chris Martin score a late winner against Slovenia.

The victory means tickets for the England match will again be like gold dust.

Robertson went on: “Last Sunday’s game was a bad time.

“It was Mother’s Day and maybe people were being bullied to stay at home. Luckily my mum was away on holiday or she might have kept me in, too!

“But it will be different next time.

“It will be a sell-out and, hopefully, we can use the home support to our advantage.”

Robertson held on to the left-back spot against Slovenia, while Kieran Tierney moved to the other flank.

Robertson said: “I thought he did brilliantly there. I know it’s a wee bit uncomfortable, but we’ll both do it if it means both of us playing.

“We’ll both fight for the left-back slot. But if one of us has to fill in at right-back, then we’ll do that.

“I’ve tried it in training and it’s a wee bit hard to adjust. You’re accustomed to going down the left and everything is the opposite of what you’re used to.”

The former Dundee Utd man hopes Gordon Strachan’s side has turned a corner in their bid to reach Russia 2018.

He said: “In the last campaign we got off to a flier and picked up all the points that we realistically should have.

“It was disappointing in the second half of the campaign. Hopefully it will be different this time and we get a good run-in until the end.

“Who knows where it might take us?”
