THE COMPETITION

-

STRUGGLING with declining sales. The most recent quarter, which included the busy Christmas period, saw its figures dwindle by almost 3%. Trying to compete with Aldi and Lidl, it launched a garden range earlier this month and claims it is cheaper than Aldi’s offering.

RECENT sales have been strong after some rocky times, but experts are cautious ahead of next week’s profits announcement. The company is scrapping 24-hour shopping in some of its Extra stores, putting 3000 jobs at risk.

HAS maintained its position as the UK’s second-largest supermarket since overtaking Asda. The Tu range is a fashion editor favourite, selling 52 pairs of skinny jeans every hour. Hit the headlines recently for telling customers not to eat daffodils!

HAS overtaken the Co-op to become our fifth-favourite supermarket. If there isn’t an Aldi near you, it probably won’t be too long before there is – stores are being opened all over the UK. Tempting shoppers with their luxury ranges, which still offer value.

EXPERTS say it’s the fastest-growing supermarket retailer, with record sales growth. Gets spenders through its doors with great value deals – last month it had Mother’s Day bouquets for £3 and now its two for £6 deal on luxury Easter eggs is going down a storm.

THE Co-op group announced losses last week, but its food division is doing well. Its core food stores are gaining customers and it is competing with rivals by offering bargains and offers. Its Dinnertime Meal Deal offers shoppers one main, one side and one dessert for £4.

BEEN to Iceland recently? If you haven’t, you’ll see a big difference next time you pop in. No longer just a “freezer shop”, it now has a much bigger range of off-the-shelf groceries like bread, cold meat and wine. The changes are ringing up profits, with sales rocketing.
