Brand Beckham scores an own goal at Palace– but why so camera-shy?
I’m baffled again by Victoria Beckham.
Just a week on from the revelation that she has turned her kids into trademarks comes her slightly strange behaviour when she was awarded her OBE.
Victoria and her husband David hid under a sheet on the back seat of their car, apparently to avoid being photographed en route to Buckingham Palace.
Then, unlike all the other recipients, they decided not to pose for official pics after Victoria received her gong for services to fashion.
This was a happy and proud day for the Beckhams, especially as Victoria has worked so hard to be accepted in the notoriously snobbish and judgemental fashion industry.
Receiving her award from Prince William was her chance to turn her nose up at all those sceptics who didn’t think she would pass muster as a designer.
A proud photo of the Spice Girl and her husband in the grounds of the Palace would also have helped lay to rest all the hoo-ha which followed the former Manchester United footballer’s huffiness about not being given a knighthood.
Just two months ago, he allegedly used some choice language to describe the Honours Committee, which has not yet granted his wish to become “Sir David”.
It was all very embarrassing and tarnished his image as an all-round decent chap.
It was a missed opportunity for them both.
I just don’t understand why they wouldn’t want to behave like everyone else and just enjoy the moment.
Others honoured on Wednesday included Olympian Jessica Ennis-Hill, who was made a dame, and the Oscar-winning actor Mark Rylance, who received a knighthood.
Both of them happily posed for photos.
They knew how much it would mean to their friends, family and well-wishers to be able to share their proud moment.
I was lucky enough to be awarded an OBE by the Queen during 2012, her Diamond Jubilee year.
It was a wonderful day made all the more special because my husband, daughter and mum and dad were all there.
We made sure we had loads of photos taken because we wanted to remember such a happy time.
I will never forget how nervous all of us were before the ceremony while waiting on our turn to meet the Queen, and then the warmth and good spirits of everyone who came along to wish us all well. It was very special. We are told Victoria took along her own photographer and she posted a picture on her Instagram account, so she did have a record of her special achievement.
It’s just a shame the couple seems unable to properly enjoy these wonderful occasions.
They did have a big family party afterwards at a posh London restaurant and I’m sure they all had a great time.
However, it takes a military-style operation to avoid photographers everywhere they go.
That, along with the feeling that they are forever “on show”, must be exhausting.
