Forfar back on top form to stay in lead

-

FORFAR found their form again to stay top of League 2.

Forfar’s Lewis Milne twice had shots before David Cox set up Gavin Swankie but he failed to fire the trigger.

Danny Denholm had a great chance on the quarter-hour mark but he skied his header over. Denholm did far better in the 21st minute when he found the target with a bullet header after Jim Lister sent over a perfect cross.

Clyde tried to respond through Scott McLaughlin but he thumped his shot out of the ground.

Forfar doubled their advantage six minutes into the second half when Cox forced the ball home from close range.

Chris McLaughlin smashed a shot off the foot of the Clyde post as the hosts continued their dominance.

And that pressure further paid off in the 78th minute as Tam O’Brien headed home Swankie’s corner-kick for No. 3.

COWDENBEATH 1 ARBROATH 2

ARBROATH threatened early on when Ryan McCord sent a pass across the face of the Cowden six-yard box but, before Steven Doris could react, Fraser Mullen cleared the danger.

In 21 minutes, Arbroath grabbed the lead when a free-kick sent Doris clear and the striker neatly clipped his 12-yard shot past Jamie Sneddon.

Cowden fell out of the picture but, seven minutes from the break, a threeman home move saw Mullen get the chance 18 yards out but he delayed his finish and Mark Whatley blocked the shot.

On the interval, Martin Scott’s 20-yard left-foot volley was held by Sneddon under his bar.

Three minutes into the second period, the visitors stretched their lead. McCord was given too much space 12 yards out and his crisp finish gave Sneddon no chance.

But, in 61 minutes, the hosts were back in it when Shaun Rutherford’s corner was met Blues skipper Scott Rumsby and his 10-yard header beat Ricky Gomes all ends up.

BERWICK 0 MONTROSE 1

IN the first minute, the ball was cut back into the box but Rangers’ Michael McKenna missed the ball completely.

Gary Fraser tried his luck from outside the box but it was high and wide.

Montrose took the lead on 38 minutes when Chris Templeman smashed the ball into the roof of the net. He went close to adding a second when he headed wide from a corner.

Greg Rutherford had a chance in 82 minuteS but his effort was blocked.

EDINBURGH C 2 ANNAN 0

EDINBURGH’S Craig Beattie tested Blair Currie after 21 minutes but could only fire against the palms of the keeper.

Four minutes later, Calum Antell clawed away a Peter Weatherspoon header away from the top corner.

On half-time, Beattie poked home after being sent through by Derek Riordan. Lewis Allan doubled City’s lead in the 59th minute with a shot.

In time added, Annan’s Darren Ramsay saw red for a tackle on Douglas Gair, City’s Chris McKee joining him for his reaction.

ELGIN 2 STIRLING ALBION 2

AFTER 40 minutes of tame action, Elgin spurned three chances just before the break as Chris McLeish, Daniel Moore and Darryl McHardy all missed from close range.

Stirling came to life just after the break. Dylan Bikey teed up Darren Smith to sidefoot home. The same duo then combined for Bikey to slam home Smith’s low cross.

Elgin sub Jamie Reid had only been on the park for a few minutes when he crashed home a shot. City pressed hard and were rewarded when captain Archie Macphee curled in a 20-yarder.
