First Premier season was a failure

JASON HOLT believes Rangers will learn from the mistakes of this season.

The midfielder admits the Ibrox men have been a failure in their first top-flight campaign for five years.

A victory at St Johnstone today would give them 19 victories from 38 matches.

Holt said: “Last season everything was great because we were winning the majority of our games and achieving our targets.

“This season has been the complete opposite. We wanted to challenge Celtic and finish solidly in second.

“The targets were set for us at the beginning of the season and we failed to achieve them.

“You have to give credit to Celtic. The way they’ve performed this season has been outstanding.

“They’re one game away from finishing the season unbeaten – you have to take your hat off sometimes.

“At the same time, as much as they’ve done really well, we’ve not played to our standards either.

“The expectation to win week in, week out, is always going to exist at a club like this.

“As players, we expect it of ourselves.

“But winning fewer than half our games? That’s nowhere near it. We’ll need to perform a lot better next season.”

Holt scored 12 times for Rangers last season, but has only hit the net once this term.

He said: “I’d like to have contributed more, in terms of goals especially. So it was disappointing in that sense, but I have played a decent amount.

“My role’s changed slightly under the new manager, but to play you’ve got to be willing to adapt.

“I have to show more aggression and get tackles in.

“I got forward a lot more in the position I had before, but I’m prepared to make sacrifices for the team.

“The run of games we’ve had has been hard to take, but it’s been enjoyable working for him.”

The 24-year-old is adamant Rangers can emerge as a stronger force after the summer break.

He added: “You learn from past mistakes personally and, as a team, you try to change a few things.

“Testing times are supposed to be when your true colours shine through.”
