Georgia joins list of Rovers icons

- By Bill Gibb

THERE are changes afoot at British telly’s most famous boozer this week.

Toyah Battersby sees her name hanging over the door of the Rovers Return as the new landlady.

But what’s reassuringly constant just now is the presence of Georgia Taylor, who plays Toyah, in Corrie.

In fact, she and Jane Danson, Leanne, recently notched up a milestone 20 years since they jointly first set foot on the cobbles.

So, did they mark the event?

“We did,” says Georgia. “We’d already arranged to go out for a coffee that day then when we realised it was our 20th anniversary.

“We took a little photo and put it on Twitter. I couldn’t believe the amount of comments we got about it. It was really lovely.”

Georgia is obviously stepping into some famous shoes as the Rovers has had some iconic figures in charge over the years.

Everyone has their own favourites and Beverley Callard’s Liz McDonald is high up on Georgia’s list.

“I’d say Liz because I think Bev has created such a classic Corrie matriarch in her,” she confides.

“She is just so adept at balancing comedy and drama.

“Also, those outfits are insanely brilliant and I adore her relationship with Steve. I also loved the character of Raquel, because Sarah Lancashire is just so fantastic.”

Toyah’s hopeful ahead of the pregnancy test that it’ll be good news and being a mum is a huge deal for her, according to Georgia.

“It’s very much a driving force in her life and at times she can be consumed by it.

“I do feel for her. I can’t imagine what it must be like to have gone through that many rounds of treatment and to have your hopes constantly dashed, when it’s the thing that you want most in life.”
