Learmonth books his semi-final spot

-

BERWICK middle-distance star Guy Learmonth clinched a spot in today’s 800m semi-final with a gutsy third place in qualifying.

The Scot, who experienced a traumatic 18 months of injury and personal tragedy after Glasgow 2014, finished behind USA’s Donavan Brazier and was pipped on the line for second place by Ethiopia’s Mohammed Aman.

Learmonth pulled out of the Scotland 4x400m squad at the Commonwealth Games when he received news that his father was dying from cancer.

In the months that followed, one of his best friends was paralysed from the neck down after a car accident and he also lost his grandfather.

His injury problems peaked when he pulled a hamstring just before the trials for the Rio Olympics.

In his heat, Learmonth secured his semi spot with a time of 1:45.90.

“You can’t hang back with these guys,” said the 25-year-old.

“They’re the best in the world. You give them five or 10 metres and you’re not going to catch them.

“So I put myself up there in contention and I’m delighted it all paid off.

“We’ve got a lot of people out there screaming for you and anyone in a British vest – it’s a lot to take in.

“I’m very composed normally, but you are nervous. Your stomach is churning a wee bit, but I was ready to go.

“I’ve been buzzing for ages, but since I arrived in London I’ve been really excited. I’m glad this is out the way now.”
