Any goal will do from now on for David

DAVID WOTHERSPOON spent preseason scoring dream goals.

But the St Johnstone star doesn’t care how he finds the net now the real action has begun – as long as he keeps finding it.

A brace of stunners against Sunderland were the highlights of an impressive summer for Wotherspoon.

But with new arrivals Stefan Scougall and returning hero Michael O’Halloran providing red-hot competition for attacking midfield berths, the Perth-born star knows he must keep producing.

“I look to score goals every season but sometimes it doesn’t happen for me,” admitted Wotherspoon.

“But pre-season was good for me. Hopefully that can continue.

“I feel last year was a bit of a stopstart season for me personally. I was in and out of the squad and had an injury at the start.

“Touch wood I have stayed injury free this time because I am looking to get a good run in the team.

“There’s real competition for places throughout the side, not just in midfield, but that is great for us.

“We know we have strength in the squad and can rely on players coming off the bench.”

Saints kick off their League Cup campaign against Partick Thistle on Wednesday night, having skipped the group stages thanks to their Europa League participation.

Once regulars in the latter stages, the Perth side have not reached the semis since 2014, when Aberdeen dished out a 4-0 thumping on their way to lifting the trophy.

The Dons did for Saints in last year’s competition too – and the memory still rankles with Wotherspoon.

But he believes this year could be the year his club finally stick the League Cup in their trophy cabinet.

“We always want to do well in the cups. There is a chance for silverware,” said the midfielder.

“Last season it was part of our preseason really but this time we are straight into the last 16. This is our first tie and we have to be ready.

“We lost at Aberdeen last season. I remember having a goal chalked off for offside and hit the post with a freekick, then they won it at the death.

“That’s cup football for you. If you don’t take your chances you don’t get through.”
