Griffiths sets his sights on hitting 100

LEIGH GRIFFITHS last night spoke of his deep desire to hit 100 goals for Celtic.

The Hoops striker netted twice for his side in their 4-1 victory over Hearts in the season curtain-raiser.

It took his tally to 87 goals in three years – just 13 short of the ton.

“I’m not far away now, and it will be a big achievement if I get there,” said the 26-year-old.

“I just want to keep making myself fit and available, and if the chances come, keep putting them away.

“To get 100 goals at a club like this would be massive for me. Over the years, a lot of great strikers have played here and not hit that mark.

“I’m not far away from that now, and I’ll be really delighted if I get there. Hopefully I can get the job done.

“I just want to keep making myself fit and available, and if the chances come, keep putting them away.

“I’m feeling really good. Wednesday in Norway was about breaking me back in, and this week we’ve got three games.

“I got 60 minutes under my belt today and, hopefully, I can replicate that in the games on Tuesday and Friday.”

The man who smashed home two stunning free-kicks for Scotland in the 2-2 draw with England in June, was equally pleased about the win from a club perspective.

“We wanted to pick up from where we left off, not just me personally, but the team,” he said

“We wanted to set a marker today, and we did that.”

“Last season was great for us, but it’s a new season now and we want to set even more records.

“We knew Hearts were going to come and try to make life difficult for us, sit back and let us have a lot of the ball.

“We created a number of chances in the first half and, thankfully, I managed to put one of them away.

“In the second half, we knew they would tire. It was just about trying to take those chances. 4-1 is a decent scoreline.”
