Desiree’s sprint success is the talk of the Toon

DESIREE HENRY, part of the Great Britain women’s 4x100m relay silver medal team at the IAAF World Championsh­ips in London, yesterday won the 100m in 11.61s at the Great North City Games in Newcastle.

She said: “This 2017 season has absolutely been amazing for me, and I have come away with a win on my last race.

“Just having the fans here and being so close made it feel so special.”

Dina Asher-Smith clocked 16.70s as she claimed the 150m race ahead of GB teammate Bianca Williams.

In the women’s 500m road race, Perri Shakes-Drayton finished ahead of Anyika Onuora with a time of one minute and 06.69s, while Melissa Courtney claimed victory in the mile, running 4:33.83.

Lorraine Ugen won the women’s long jump on countback after the top three all set the same distance of 6.46m.

Ugen, who finished ahead of Kseninja Balta and Jazmin Sawyers, said: “I’ve never seen that before, everyone jumping the same distance.”

In the men’s 150m, Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake, who ran the anchor leg of Great Britain’s 4x100m relay gold at the IAAF World Championsh­ips in London, was second by only 0.02secs behind America’s Ameer Webb as he recorded a time of 15.26s.

Today, Sir Mo Farah – who last month finished his glittering track career with a thrilling 5000m victory at the Diamond League final in Zurich–issettocom­petein the Great North Run, where the four-time Olympic champion will be seeking a record fourth-successive triumph.
