Religion ‘diverted’ Farron

-

TIM FARRON’S religious beliefs led to him becoming “diverted” during a disastrous General Election campaign, former Scottish Secretary Alistair Carmichael has admitted.

The Liberal Democrat MP said his former UK leader had fought a “very dignified and brave campaign”.

He criticised Mr Farron’s overall performance, however, saying his ex-boss “allowed himself to become diverted” as controversies raged about his beliefs.

Mr Carmichael added: “Matters of theology assumed an importance I can’t remember in 34 years of political activism. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

But the Orkney & Shetland MP insisted his party had the right Brexit election message.

Mr Farron pushed for a second referendum on EU membership but saw his vote share fall, despite picking up an extra four seats.

Mr Carmichael maintained the Lib Dems are in the “sweet spot of British politics”.

He added: “We need to maintain a consistent, liberal position so that when the public mood changes (on Brexit) we stand to be the beneficiaries.”
